“You should tell them that indistinctiveness is my forte” — Turner’s reply when hearing that some rich douchebag that purchased one of his paintings complained about it and called it indistinct (Willy’s taking none of your shit)

Jan van Goyen, A Calm (1646 - 1650)
“Jan van Goyen was one of the most eminent masters of Dutch realistic landscape painting, the originator of a school. An extraordinarily prolific artist, his pictures canonised his country’s landscape and aroused widespread interest in the world of the dunes, the tumbledown peasant houses along the canals, the old trees standing solitary on the broad plain, and the sight of distant towns under high, cloudy skies. To satisfy the rising demand for landscape paintings of the new kind, he changed his painting technique: the picture was laid on the canvas or wood base alla prima, with quick, confident brushwork, few colours and the freshness of invention. Van Goyen was an excellent draughtsman and a tireless observer. He spent a lot of time in the countryside, setting down motifs in his sketchbook from direct experience. The numerous variations on these he subsequently produced in the studio reflected the simplicity and the inexhaustible natural beauty of the Dutch countryside.” - MoFA, Budapest
